Can you infect the world? That’s the tantalizing question posed by “Plague Inc.,” a unique new game available now on Windows Phone for 99 cents.

In this mix of high strategy and terrifyingly realistic simulation, you evolve a deadly pathogen that will spread beyond Patient Zero and adapt to any cure humanity develops to defend itself.

Designed especially for touchscreens, “Plague Inc.” lets you choose from 12 diseases to unleash on the world. Your goal is to kill as many humans as possible before they find a cure.

The premise of “Plague Inc.” is so realistic that the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began using the game as a tool to teach the public about outbreaks and disease transmission (read more here).

James Vaughan, the founder of Ndemic Creations, created “Plague Inc.” as a creative challenge in his spare time.

“Without a medical background, I did a lot of online research in order to make sure it felt realistic to players,” Vaughan said in the blog post link above.

“As an intelligent and sophisticated strategy game, I think “Plague Inc.” appeals to people looking for something more meaningful and substantial than the majority of mobile games.”

Vaughan’s work has paid off. “Plague Inc.” has been played by 45 million players worldwide on other platforms. It has also won multiple “Game of the Year” awards.
