National Trust

What is it: an app to discover historic places in the UK

Why we love it: National Trust is a UK conservation charity that works to protect historic sites and open spaces, and they’ve recently released an official app that puts information about more than 550 protected places around England, Wales, and Northern Ireland right into your hands. If you’re looking for historic houses and buildings, archaeological sites and monuments, or gorgeous coastal sites, National Trust can be your go-to guide. The app also tracks events occurring at these special places, ranging from educational talks to live music.

GivingTales

What is it: a fantastic story-telling app

Why we love it: GivingTales is a very cool app for children that gives you access to 4 beautifully-illustrated popular Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales. The tales are narrated by an excellent cast of actors: Sir Roger Moore, Stephen Fry, Ewan McGregor, and Dame Joan Collins. If that’s not enough to convince you, 30% of the proceeds go to UNICEF UK. The first tale, “The Princess and the Pea”, is free, while the rest cost $3.99 each.

The app offers news on tons of different sports and leagues, such as soccer, tennis, F1 — if it’s a sport, it’s probably there. Bb Student

What is it: the official BlackBoard app

Why we love it: College students in the US likely have a love/hate relationship with BlackBoard, the place to go for your assignments, lecture notes, and course info. But happily, things just got a bit easier in student life with the new (free) Windows Phone app. You can take assignments, tests, and quizzes, see submitted course work including feedback from instructors, and more.
