How to be a vlogger with Lumia

Aakash Sharma loves to vlog on his Lumia 640 XL and Lumia 930, encouraging his friends to switch to Windows Phone with his videos.

Just in case you didn’t know, ‘vlog’ is short for video log or video blog. It uses video as a medium to share messages and information, including supporting text and images.

An aspiring manager, 22-year-old Aakash Sharma currently owns five Lumia smartphones: Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 930, Lumia 830, Lumia 730, and Lumia 1520. He eats, breathes, and sleeps Lumias with his videos and photos.

“I love to shoot videos on my Lumia 930 because of its optical image stabilization and digital video stabilization capabilities,” said Aakash.

Who needs a professional camera to vlog and record videos when your Lumia, such as the Lumia 540 or Lumia 640 XL, lets you enjoy full HD video content?

“I don’t need anything else as I have the power of Lumia,” continued Aakash.

Q: How do you use your Lumia 640 XL day-to-day?

A: I use the Lumia 640 XL to complete my college assignments on the go and do family calls via Skype using its full-HD 5MP wide-angle front-facing camera. Currently, I am enrolled in the Windows Insider program and testing Windows 10 on my phone.

Q: Why did you become a vlogger?

A: I used to troubleshoot phone issues for my friends and for the Windows Phone fan group on Facebook. Soon, this became my hobby and I thought of shooting videos to show them [how to solve their issues].

Q: How do you shoot your videos? Do you plan?

A: I prefer to shoot videos in a series instead of one long video. Before I start shooting, I make a mental note of the shots I need in my video while scribbling my narration in OneNote.

It’s a good idea to show yourself, so I use the Lumia 640 XL [and its 5MP front-facing camera] for the introduction and shoot the rest with my Lumia 930 [and its 20MP main camera].

Q: How do you prepare to vlog with your Lumia?

A: Keep your main idea simple so that everyone can understand your video. Get a decent tripod for your Lumia to record stable shots and a lapel mic for distortion-free audio. My Lumia 930 records in Dolby Surround Sound so I use the built-in mic.

If shooting indoors, have a small light like this. Next, shoot in landscape mode as this eliminates the black bars on sides. Lastly, before you start shooting, relax, smile, and start talking as if no one is watching you.

Q: How do you edit your videos on your Lumia?

A: First, I select the best videos and remove extra shots using the Lumia Video Trimmer app. Then with Movie Creator Beta, I merge the selected videos.

After that, I caption them. I like to experiment with various effects or use themes. I prefer at least 720p or 1080p resolution to save my videos.

Finally, I use the Video Upload app to upload my vlogs to my online channel.

Q: Can you share some vlogging tips?

A: Check for good lighting when shooting outdoors or make use of the available light indoors. Rehearse your lines before you record them. It is preferred to appear natural, but stick to your planned script.

Next, record in all sorts of shot sizes (mid shot or long shot or close-up) to see which suits your script and then try to edit them in the various video-editing apps to understand your comfort level.

Also, add captions wherever you couldn’t reproduce the right audio because of noise.

Lastly, don’t over-edit and keep your video original.

Q: What are the top five Windows Phone video-editing apps you would recommend to budding vloggers?

A: First, use the free Lumia Video Trimmer app to trim your videos perfectly for lossless quality.

Second, use Video Editor 8.1 ($1.49) to crop, split videos, and apply effects.

Third, Movie Moments  (free) offers great music according to your video’s theme.

Fourth, Movie Creator Beta (free) helps to select the best frame, rotate and flip videos, and add text.

Fifth, MovieJax (free) is an all-round video editor that you can use to practice vlogging.

Q: What do you do in your spare time besides thinking about your next video?

A: I like to talk to Cortana and play games such as World Cricket Championship ($2.99) and Asphalt 8: Airborne (free). I also take selfies with the Lumia 640 XL.

Thanks a lot for talking to us, Aakash.
