About the Summer Games

The first Summer Games was held in Chicago, Illinois, in 1968 as a way to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The sports event is so influential that it’s one of only two organizations authorized to use the name “Olympics” in the United States.

Since its inception, the games’ mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Its reach encompasses more than 4.5 million athletes in 170 countries and millions more volunteers and supporters.

Microsoft is proud to be a partner for this event. You can read profiles about a few of the athletes competing this week—such as swimmer Andy Miyares, runner Daniel Wolff, sprinter Matthew Pascoe, and gymnast Xing Le—in the Microsoft News Center.

Lumia owners in the U.S. can watch the opening ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games live on July 25 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on the free WatchESPN app.

To install the free Special Olympics LA2015 app on your Lumia, open the Store app and search for “Special Olympics LA2015.”
