Imagine embarking on an eight-month journey covering 18,000 miles and dozens of snow-capped peaks using only skis and willpower.

That’s the story of Karel Svoboda and Martin Štourač, two friends from the Czech Republic whose history of fantastic road trips have escalated into an epic adventure. This last February, they followed the Silk Road from the Balkans to the Himalayas—and used their Lumia 830 and Lumia 930 phones, plus OneDrive and OneNote, to record and share their journey.

The itinerary took them through the dangerous peaks of Afghanistan, the mountainous roads of Tajikistan, and the Tian-Sian mountains of Kyrgyzstan, from which Martin paraglided, using his Lumia as a GPS while in flight.

Karel said the duo used OneNote to store and save vital information about their journey.

“We have it synced with our smartphones,” he explained. “It has been a big help for us, not to have to carry all of the information with us, to have the information in our hands all of the time.”

They also used OneDrive for storing and sharing their photos and videos.

“The photos from the Lumia phones have been such high quality, and OneDrive is a great way to keep them organized,” said Karel.

Here are a few photos from their journey, taken with their Lumia 830 and Lumia 930:
