Nokia Lumia 1020

Juha Alakarhu is Nokia’s head of imaging technology. Along with colleague Eero Salmelin, he invented the 41-megapixel sensor technology that lies at the heart of the amazing new Nokia Lumia 1020.

In this series, we take a walk together through a gallery of sample pictures and video taken with our new superphone and Juha discusses how the different components of the camera on the Lumia 1020 can each contribute to taking great pictures.

#1 Large sensor: zoom into details

Juha says:

“These sample images are great examples of the key benefits of an extremely large image sensor used together with our most advanced optics on the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The Lumia 1020’s six Zeiss lenses and the second generation 41-megapixel back-side-illuminated (BSI) sensor make it possible to capture even the smallest of details and allows for high resolution zoom.

What’s astonishing about these sample shots is that there’s no loss of visible detail. You can zoom in and reframe the picture multiple times using a Nokia Lumia 1020. You might find that there’s another story in your picture that you didn’t even see when you first took it. We can see that with the balloons in the second picture that we’ve already featured here on Conversations.

There’s a point to be made here about the advantages of our imaging system compared to an optical zoom. With optical zoom, you make your decisions before you take the picture. With our ultra-large image sensor, you can continue to make new decisions long after the initial image has been shot.”
