Last week Nokia announced the phone that so many of us have been waiting for, the Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone with its mind-boggling 41-megapixel sensor. During the launch of the phone in New York City, Nokia shared the work of numerous partners, who are currently developing unique new apps for the device, including: Hipstamatic Oggl PRO, Path, Vyclone, Yelp, CNN, Foursquare, Flipboard, Vine and more.

These developers are making the most of Nokia’s new Software Development Kit (SDK) for imaging apps. The Nokia Imaging SDK is available as a free download and enables developers to create imaging apps for all Windows Phone devices.

At the same time, Nokia Developer announced a new contest called Nokia Future/Capture that is open to Windows Phone app developers from around the world. Developers are being challenged to come up with clever and innovative ideas for new apps and hacks that can truly take advantage of the camera technology packed inside the Nokia Lumia 1020.

For this contest, developers can use one of the Windows Phone camera or imaging APIs, or perhaps use the features found in the new Nokia Imaging SDK.

It is safe to say that the judges for this contest are not looking for anything that feels like a “been there, done that” copycat app. This is a chance to seriously go wild, and come up with ideas that will make people sit up and take notice.

What can developers win by entering Nokia Future/Capture?

Developers that submit the 10 best ideas to the Future/Capture contest will be whisked away, expenses paid, to an exclusive Nokia Future /Capture Hackathon in Lund, Sweden at the end of August where they will have the opportunity to turn their ideas into new Windows Phone apps.

The developer that wins the Hackathon will get a Nokia Lumia 1020, as well as a trip with VIP treatment to an upcoming Nokia event, where the winning app will be featured. The winning app will be promoted via several online Nokia channels, as well as on the Windows Phone Store. There will also be prizes for two runners-up.

The deadline for developers to submit their three best ideas to Nokia Future/Capture is July 31, 2013. So don’t delay. But don’t submit half-baked ideas either!

For those of you Conversations readers that are not developers, what sort of new imaging apps are you hoping to see on the Nokia Lumia 1020? Share your ideas in the Comments below.
