Continuing our series of sample pictures and video taken with the new Nokia Lumia 1020,  Nokia’s head of imagining technology, Juha Alakarhu tells us about how the different components of the camera on the Lumia 1020 can each contribute to taking great pictures.

Juha, along with colleague Eero Salmelin, invented the 41-megapixel sensor technology that lies at the heart of Nokia’s latest superphone.

Juha says: The above shot combines a number of our technologies to produce an interesting effect. On the one hand, the Nokia Lumia 1020 provides excellent low-light performance thanks to the wide aperture and Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). On the other, we offer manual control for exposure time – from one sixteen-thousandth of a second (1/16000s) up to four seconds.

For the light rails effect seen in the picture, you would combine the xenon flash together with a long exposure time, set manually. Then move a lit object like a phone in front of the camera to create the light trails and let the xenon flash freeze everything happening close to the camera.

Previously, it was only possible to do these types of artistic effect with SLR cameras, but now with the Lumia 1020, you can really unleash your creativity and create amazing low light shots.

Having precise manual control of the shutter speed can be an important tool in the photographer’s kit. It’s also really useful in bright light in order to capture the action. In this shot, the shutter speed was taken down to 1/600 of a second in order to freeze the movement without blur.
