The people of 2013: best interviews
The last year has seen Nokia Conversations really take off in terms of talking to the engineers, designers and executives behind the headlines and the product launches.
To all of them – and all the third-party developers and suppliers – thank you so much for helping us give readers the inside-track on Nokia phones, services, apps and innovations.
Let’s take a look back at just a small selection of the highlights.
The first significant batch of Nokia launches for 2013 came at Mobile World Congress in February, with the launch of the Lumia 720 and Lumia 520, together with the Nokia 105 and Nokia 301. Here, Mikko Kahlos, the young talent behind the incredibly successful Nokia Lumia 520, explains what it took to bring Lumia to new price points. We were also delighted to talk with Tracy Chen about the tiny but revolutionary $20 entry-level phone that is the Nokia 105.
Zooming forward, Juha Alakarhu, head of imaging technologies, has had a massive year, reaching its first climax with the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020 in July. Here, he and co-inventor of PureView, Eero Salmelin, discuss the journey from the Nokia 808 PureView that debuted in 2012 to today’s technological tour-de-force.
More recently, at the Nokia World launch of the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 2520, we invited Juha and National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez to interview each other about the future of digital imaging.
Innovation by Design
Peter Skillman from Nokia Design is a man of many parts. At the New Delhi launch of the Nokia Asha 501 in May, he was the man behind the creation of the new Fastlane experience that is such an integral part of the new Asha platform. Since then, he’s turned his attention to designing location services, and in November, he explained the art and science of creating new interfaces for HERE.
Peter Griffith, also from Nokia Design, masterminded the industrial design of the new Asha 50x series, which he spoke to us about in October. But this was, in some ways, the latest expression of a much longer period devoted to the mastery of materials. Here he is back in May, discussing the design of Nokia’s mobile phones from the first half of the year.
The biggest launch (in a literal sense) of 2013 was the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet. A lot of people had asked why it had taken so long for the company to join this market. Head of Connected Devices Heikki Norta had answers for everyone and explained how the Lumia 2520 builds on Nokia’s mobile phone heritage.
Outside intervention
We mustn’t forget our partners, either. Here, Corning’s David Valasquez explains why the company’s amazing Gorilla Glass is such an important asset for Nokia’s smartphone’s. Equally integral to the success of our products this year has been ZEISS. Oliver Schindelback and Sandra Gold explained how ZEISS works with Nokia to deliver new innovations in lens manufacturing.
And lastly, let’s hear it for the developers working to create new apps for the Windows Phone Store. The size of these ranges from boardroom to bedroom, and everything in-between. Here’s Dan Ayoub, the producer behind Halo: Spartan Assault. And here’s Joshua Grzybowski talking about Pouch, the Pocket app for Windows Phone, his very first published app.
