Keeping up with current events is relatively simple when you have a smartphone. But it’s also easy for stories to slip through the cracks when you’re scanning headlines on a newsfeed.
For in-depth analysis and comprehensive news coverage, check out these news podcasts. Like radio or television news programs, they run the gamut from hard news and breaking news stories to lifestyle and entertainment pieces.
Better yet, unlike an online news site, a podcast doesn’t need Internet access once it’s been downloaded. There may be no better way to stay informed on your morning commute, even after you’ve lost Wi-Fi access.
Global News from the BBC World Service is a 30-minute daily podcast featuring news, interviews, and on-the-spot reporting from around the world. The British Broadcasting Corporation is the world’s leading public service broadcaster.
The Economist is a print and online magazine that delivers insight and opinion on international news, politics, business, finance, science, and technology. Its daily audio podcast is composed of articles from each week’s issue, read by professional broadcasters.
This daily news and opinion podcast is taken from newshound Rachel Maddow’s hour-long TV show on MSNBC and is available in audio and video formats. It covers U.S. and international news, but has a sweet spot for political coverage in the U.S. from a progressive point of view.

Another excellent option is Pocket Casts ($3.99), a versatile podcast app that offers the expected features plus the ability to play audio at variable speeds and customize the start time of episodes to skip repetitive intros.
