With its haunting music and cool, 8-bit graphics, you know right from the start that The Last Door: Collector’s Edition ($2.99 USD) will deliver some spooky, special fun.

Inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, the game’s pixelated look is reminiscent of classic point-and-click adventures from the late 1980s and early 1990s such as “Alone in the Dark” and “The Secret of Monkey Island.”

As you move protagonist Jeremiah Devitt through different eerie locations and situations in Victorian England, you’ll combine objects and solve the puzzles that help him advance. Tapping your Lumia’s screen with your finger performs movement and object interaction.

Jeremiah seeks the dark secret of his past and the whereabouts of a childhood friend. As you play through all four terrifying episodes in this collector’s edition of the game, Jeremiah will begin to remember a long-buried secret and discover things man was not meant to know.

The journey is an engaging, intriguing challenge. The game’s many puzzles will sometimes stump you, but the answers are mostly within reach. The developers of “The Last Door” estimate that people can finish an episode in about an hour and a half—or roughly six hours to get through the entire game.

As a diehard fan of adventures from the golden age of video games, I’ve been looking forward to the launch of “The Last Door” on Windows Phone for weeks. It definitely doesn’t disappoint, and I’ve been on a nostalgic high ever since I installed it on my Lumia 1520.
