Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour for Windows Phone 8 debuts

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour ($6.99), a first-person shooter from Xbox and Gameloft that pushes the boundaries of mobile gaming, has just been published for Windows Phone 8. Buy it here. (If you don’t see it yet, give it a little time.)

The game puts you in the boots of an elite soldier helping his unit to avert global devastation in the wake of a nuclear disaster. Gameloft pulled out all the stops on this one. Hollywood provided the sound effects and voice acting. The Havok gaming engine conjures the kind of 3-D animations and effects you’re more likely to find on console games. Add to that multiplayer mode, leaderboards, 20,000 weapon arrangements, and battlefields ranging from Antarctica to Barcelona—and you’ve got all the makings of a seriously hot game. If you don’t believe me, check out the trailer.

As you might expect from a silicon-pushing game like this, it’s a huge download—about one gigabyte—and runs only on high-memory Windows Phone 8 models. You’ve been warned. Give it a try and tell me what you think.
