CES2014: AMD Showcases New Technology for 2014

AMD had a huge presence at CES 2014, so big they needed two giant tents: one to showcase the next-generation “Surround House” and another to showcase a variety of technology spanning an array of mobile-to-desktop silicon and devices. While at the show I got an overview of the latest AMD technology from AMD marketing director Gabe Gravning. In this post I’ll share some of the highlights from what I saw. Be sure to check out the video at the end of the post for the full story.

One of the first things Gabe and I talked about was the new Kaveri APU, and how this new platform leverages AMD’s HSA architecture for optimized performance across CPU and GPU.

This new APU is the most powerful system of its type that AMD has released to date. With up to 12 total compute cores, Steamroller CPU cores, HSA architecture, Mantle support and TrueAudio, this new APU is packed with new features and powerful compute capabilities.

If you like multi-mon PC gaming setups and want mobility at the same time, AMD has you covered. On display was an MSI laptop running M290x graphics driving three 1920×1080 displays from a single DisplayPort cable. This magic is possible with the use of a DisplayPort hub. Now that’s an impressive mobile multi-mon setup!

Even more mobile is the Nano PC concept that AMD had on display. This tiny full PC system is built on the Mullins APU and it runs Windows 8.1! AMD showed this PC running FIFA 14 in their showcase, and it looked really good!

It wouldn’t be a proper AMD showcase if there wasn’t a huge and amazing Eyefinity setup, and CES 2014 was no exception! In the AMD booth was a massive 5×1 full-HD array of displays all run off a single R290x graphics card. Amazing!

In this video, Gabe Gravning gives me a tour of the AMD booth and explains some of the technology that was on display:

I had a lot of fun visiting AMD at CES 2014. There was a lot to see, and I’m planning to follow-up on many of these stories this year on the Extreme Windows Blog, so stick around if you want to know more about this technology. One thing is for sure, it’s going to get extreme!
