Social Innovator of the Week: Susanna Lau

Today at Nokia Connects I thought it was high time to shine the spotlight on an influential voice in the fashion world. This follows on from the lovely Naomi Goggin last week, whose photography has been making waves in all the right places! Enter Susanna Lau, aka Susie Bubble, fashion blogger and all-out style enthusiast!

Possibly Britain’s best-known (and best loved) fashion blogger, Susanna Lau is living proof that with a bit (or a lot) of hard work, some sleepless nights, and an all-consuming vision you can use the power of the internet to turn a passion into a career.

Susanna, whose pseudonym Susie Bubble apparently came about as a primary school nickname because she ‘always looked like I was in a world of my own – in a BUBBLE!’ has been running her fashion blog Style Bubble since 2006. She says that her ‘love of fashion was initially an act of rebellion against my parents and the ‘popular’ people at school – which then developed into something all consuming and now is my number one passion.’

The blog consists of her widely read thoughts, personal experiences and observations on fashion with a focus on spotlighting young and unknown talent. Susie was editor of Dazed Digital, the website of Dazed & Confused magazine, from 2008-2010. Susie now works full-time on her blog and other freelance projects, including writing for Elle, The Daily Rubbish and Dazed Digital.

In the 6 years she has been running Style Bubble, Susie has come to be heralded as the ‘queen bee’ of fashion blogging:

‘While Lady Gaga has brought avant-garde fashion into the mainstream, Lau, or “Susie Bubble,” is a pioneer of fashion experimentation with a loyal and vast online audience. Not many people can pull off wearing a neon Indian headdress, lingerie as outerwear and a head-to-toe fuchsia outfit–all the while making it looking chic. Lau’s blog is a must-read, if only to admire her brazen outfits.’ sbeulah

Here’s Susie talking about her perceptions of London and New York fashion at new York Fashion Week:

Susie is a great example of how the power of the internet and social media to connect like-minded people has helped turn a budding young talent with a passion for fashion into a respected voice in the fashion industry.
