Opera to give new life to classic Nokia phones

2015 marks shift to Opera-based browser and app store.

Late last year, we shared the news that Opera will provide the default browser and app store for classic Nokia phones.

Starting this month, if you own a classic Nokia based on Series 40, Series 60, Symbian, Asha or Nokia X, you’ll start to see messages about how to make the switch from Nokia Store to Opera Mobile Store; and similarly, from Nokia Xpress Browser to Opera Mini.

In both cases, it’s pretty simple –here’s what’s ahead.

Browser

Nokia Xpress Browser will be discontinued towards the end of 2015 and replaced by Opera Mini. Like Xpress, Opera Mini is a proxy browser, which means it compresses your Internet data, making mobile browsing faster and highly efficient. Depending on which Nokia device you use, when you launch Nokia Xpress Browser on your phone, you will be asked if you want to upgrade to the Opera Mini browser. If you want to experience Opera Mini now, you can do so with just a few clicks, and you will be redirected to the Opera Mini home page. If you don’t want to change browsers now, you don’t have to: we’ll remind you from time to time, to make sure you can continue to browse the web on your mobile.

Store

Lastly, you may have already received an in-app notification from Nokia Store that it will soon become Opera Mobile Store. Nokia Store as you know it will be discontinued on 31 March 2015, but don’t worry: you don’t have to do anything now, other than continue to use the Store app as is. In the coming weeks, we’ll help you make a smooth transition and continue to enjoy access to thousands upon thousands of apps when Opera Mobile Store becomes the default for classic Nokia phones.
