How to scan QR codes and text with your Windows 8.1 phone

The debut of Cortana changed how Lumia users scan QR codes and text. Here’s a step-by-step guide on the new process.

It turns out there’s a whole new process for scanning QR codes on Windows 8.1 phones.

Don’t worry—it’s easy!

Here’s how to scan a QR code in Windows 8.1:

1. Press the Camera button on your phone.

2. Tap the Settings icon to open your camera settings.

3. Tap the Lenses tile.

5. Scan the QR code by pointing your phone at it.

6. Tap the result to get info about the QR code.

7. You’re done!

To scan text for translation or search, follow above steps 1 through 4. Then select the “scan text” box instead.

Please note that the old process for scanning still applies on Windows 8.1 phones if Cortana is turned off or isn’t available in your country or region.

If you prefer an easier way to scan codes, try installing QR for Cortana. This free app gives you a shortcut directly to Bing Vision.

Looking for an even faster solution? Check out the QR Code Reader app that puts your Lumia phone into scanning mode instantly.
