Features you can access on your Lumia even when it’s locked
A locked Lumia doesn’t put you out of action: Here are features you can access on your Lumia without unlocking it.
You won’t miss out on news and notifications if your Lumia is locked because it’s still keeping tabs for you. A quick peek at the bottom of your lock screen will show you what you’ve missed.
Here’s a list of what you can do even when your Lumia is locked.
Emergency calls
Swipe up from the lock screen to see the keypad and tap emergency call.
Ringer
If you’re in a meeting or movie theatre and need to quickly silence your Lumia, wake up your phone by pressing the power button. Then press down on the volume button.
Action Center
If you’ve missed a call, an SMS or e-mail, see all these notifications on your Lumia in the Action Center. Access them by swiping down from the top of your Lumia screen..
From Action Center, you can turn Wi-Fi on and off as well as Bluetooth, Airplane mode, and more. Read our story and learn how to manage your notifications here.
Quick tip: To set up notifications in Action Center, open settings and tap notifications + actions. Next, select the “show notifications in action center when my phone is locked” box.
Cortana and Speech
You can use Cortana (available in select markets) or speech by tapping the search button on your lock screen. Cortana will then listen and respond to requests such as sending texts, setting alarms or adding reminders. Read our recent story on how to get the most out of Cortana here.
To set up this feature, go to settings and tap speech. Select the “allow speech above lock” box.
If Cortana is not available in your country, you can still make calls or text a contact when your phone is locked. Press the search button to bring up speech feature and order away.
Camera
You don’t need to unlock your Lumia to capture a perfect moment. Just make sure your phone wakes up when the camera button is pressed. To do that, head to settings and select applications. Tap photos+camera and select the “press and hold camera button to wake up the phone” check box.
Music and podcasts
Rewind, fast-forward, pause or play tunes right from the lock screen. Press the power button and select from the quick access menu.
Date, time, and appointments 
You can always check the date and time and see your next appointments at a glance. Choose from calendar, e-mail, Skype, Twitter, Facebook or any other app to get detailed status notifications right on your lock screen.
To set this up choose settings and select Lock screen and then under choose an “app to show detailed status,” select Calendar or e-mail, depending on your needs.
And last but not least, do you have a password lock on your Lumia? It’s a useful feature. Besides better securing your phone from prying eyes, a password lock can save you from awkward moments such as accidentally calling your boss.
