Windows 7 themes: ‘Tis the season to decorate your desktop!

I can’t give you real boughs of holly, but hopefully the two new themes we published this week will help you make your PC look a little jollier. The first theme, Decking the Halls, unwraps a gorgeous treasure-trove of shining glass ornaments, ribbons, and sparkling tinsel. To complete the experience all you need is a mug of hot spiced cider and a warm gingerbread cookie.

Our other new holiday theme, Decorating the Trees, features festive winter touches in orchards, gardens, and forests; I like to think that it also suggests the perfume of fresh-cut fir and cedar boughs and the silence of softly falling snow.

Every December I carry the same big old cardboard boxes up from the basement, and carefully unwrap the crumpled tissue paper protecting the same delicate blown-glass ornaments. Some of these fragile baubles are mementoes of my childhood, and a treasured few are family heirlooms that I inherited from my grandmother. But just as antique ornaments’ beauty is not diminished by their age, I hope that you will still enjoy last year’s theme, Holiday Lights. After all, these strings of colored lights will never burn out or wind themselves into frustrating tangles that take forever to undo.

If you’d rather contemplate the natural beauties of the season, the snowy trees, ice-encrusted coves and chilly morning light of our Winter theme may provide what you’re looking for.
