I am a news junkie. I am constantly reading through RSS feeds and reading new posts and articles from across the Web throughout the day. When I heard Flipboard was coming to Windows, I was stoked. And today I am excited to share the news that Flipboard is now available for download from the Windows Store.
With Flipboard, you can catch up on the news, discover amazing things from around the world, or stay connected to the people closest to you – all in one place. Flipboard is your personalized magazine. By flipping over to “Discover”, you can customize your Flipboard with iconic sources like The New York Times, PEOPLE magazine, Fast Company and many more. These will show up as “Your Subscriptions”. You can find all kinds of content sources to subscribe to – or “magazines” of curated content. As you read through stories from your subscriptions and social networks, you can use the “+” button on something that catches your attention and add it to your own magazine that others can subscribe to. Magazines created by others will show up under “Discover” and “By Our Readers”.
I’ve created my own magazine called Nerd Things you can subscribe to. In my magazine, you’ll find all kinds of nerdy geeky things I read and come across that I want to share with others (you).
With Windows 8.1, you can pin Flipboard right to your Start screen where it will light up as a Live Tile which can be resized to be as big as you want or as small as you want. You can even pin specific magazines to your Start screen too! Flipboard also takes advantage of the swipe gestures in Windows 8.1 too. If you swipe up from the bottom of the screen, you get the app commands like Subscribe, Refresh, Edit, Flip It, etc. Swiping down from the top brings up modules like “Contributors” or “People Also Read”. And on Cover Stories, swiping from the top will bring up “More For You” and “Magazines You Might Like” which is a great way to discover new content. Oh and you can Flipboard snapped next to other apps on your screen too so you can be writing emails or tweeting from Twitter while reading content from Flipboard.
